During this academic year, the Faculty of Computers, Informatics, and Microelectronics (FCIM) at the Technical University of Moldova (TUM) is hosting Karl David Neergaard an American educator and researcher specializing in linguistics and cognitive sciences as a visiting professor.
Before arriving in the Republic of Moldova, Karl David Neergaard served as a professor and researcher at the Institute for the Future of Education in Spain, where his research focused on the interplay between language, education, and technology.
His presence at TUM is made possible through the English Language Program, with the support of the United States Department of State, as part of an international academic mobility initiative.
Throughout the academic year, the American professor is contributing to the training of FCIM students by conducting courses in contemporary fields that lie at the intersection of technology, linguistics, and ethics.
In the first semester, he is teaching “Ethics and Integrity” and “Computational Linguistics,” offering students the chance to explore the ethical responsibilities associated with technological development, as well as the principles of automated language processing – ranging from speech recognition to conversational systems (chatbots).
In the second semester, activities will continue within the field of Computational Linguistics, with a focus on identifying research questions, selecting appropriate methodologies, and developing academic writing skills. For FCIM, the involvement of international professors represents a valuable opportunity to strengthen the international dimension of the educational process, facilitating the exchange of experience, access to new pedagogical approaches, and the exposure of students to international academic and technological perspectives.
FCIM continues to foster an open, international, and forward-looking academic environment, in which technical training is complemented by critical thinking, professional responsibility, and the development of research skills.
