History

The needs of the Republic in the preparation of the engineering departments in the field of microelectronics led to the opening of the speciality “Microelectronics and Semidconductor Devices” (currently “Microelectronics and Nanotechnologies”) within TUM in 1965, which determined the scientific development direction of great success of the faculty.

In 1973, the department changes to Microelectronics and Semiconductor Devices (MDS) based on the merging of the Department of Physics of Semiconductors and Semiconductor Devices and the department of Industrial Electronics.

The department founded the specialties “Radioelectronic systems” and “Telecommunications” which subsequently became separate departments. In 2006 the specialty “Engineering of Biomedical Systems” was founded.

By the decision of the UTM Senate in July of 2012, the name of the department was changed to Microelectronics and Biomedical Engineering. And in November 2016, during the restructuring of the Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics, the name of the department was changed to Microelectronics and Biomedical Engineering.
