History

The “Informatics and System Engineering” department was created following the merging of the “Computers” and “Applied Informatics” departments in January of 2017 (the decision of the TUM senate of November 29, 2016, confirmed by the order of the rector no. 14-sp from 04.01.2017), as a result of the modification of the organizational structure of the “Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics” faculty.

The “Computers” department, initially known as “Computing”, was established in 1974 following the division of the “Automation and Computing” department into the “Automatics” and “Computing” departments.  Subsequently, in 1990 takes place a new division of a profile “Computing” and a general one “Computing and Programming”. In 2005 the “Computing” department is restructured and renamed to “Computers”.

The department “Applied Informatics” was founded in 1989 as a didactic and scientific component of the “Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics” faculty, back then being named “Computing and programming”. Between 2000 and 2007 the department bore the name “Informatics and Applied Modern Languages”, and between 2007 and 2017 it bore the name “Applied Informatics”.

Research objectives

  • Processing of unstructured information: artificial intelligence, automated text translation, information search engines, computational linguistics.
  • Researching mathematical models and developing effective methods for decision problems, which occur specifically in different branches of science, and which lead to solving optimization problems.
  • Verifying, securing and evaluating the performance of computer systems and computer networks.
  • Data acquisition and virtual instrumentation.
  • Designing, testing and validating the computing systems with reconfigurable architectures.
  • Computing systems with concurrent data processing.
