History

In 1964, with the founding of the Polytechnic Institute of Chișinău (IPC), the department “Automatics and Computing” (ATC) was established. The ATC department trained engineers in the specialty “Automatics and Telemechanics” (first admission in 1959 at the State University of Moldova and the first promotion in 1964) and taught the introductory courses of computer science at all IPC faculties.

In 1974 the ATC department is divided into the “Automatics” department and the Technical Department of Calculation. In 1979 at the Automatics department, the specialty “Automated Management Systems” (SAC) is founded, which in 1988 will lead to a new division and the creation of the department Automated Information and Management Processing Systems (SPAIC). In 1990, the re-profiling of the SPAIC department and its transformation (1992) into the Department of Information Technologies with the specialty “Information Technologies” (IT) began.

The Automatics and Information Technologies department was created in 2006 by combining the departments Information Technologies with Automatics. In 2016, by the decision of the CIM faculty council and the TUM senate, the faculty moved to a departmental structure. The ATI department becomes the Department of Software Engineering and Automatics, including the Anglophone and Francophone branches (study programs of Information Technologies).
